Call for Papers 3rd A L E P User Group Workshop =================================== March 6 - 7, 1997 Saarbruecken & A L E P Tutorial ================== March 5, 1997 Saarbruecken ALEP has now been established as a widely acknowledged Language Engineering platform attracting more and more interest in academia and industry. The suitability of ALEP for the development of medium to large-scale linguistic resources has been proven in the context of projects such as GRAMCHECK and LS-GRAM which have received remarkable reviews. At the same time, the ALEP support and maintenance action line funded by the European Commission has been terminated. Against this background, the "Institute for Applied Information Sciences" (IAI), Saarbruecken, is taking the initiative of organizing the "3rd AUG Workshop". This workshop is intended as a forum for sharing experience acquired with ALEP, keeping track of latest developments concerning the platform itself and discussing future prospects of ALEP. The workshop addresses not only people who have already worked with ALEP, but also any party with an interest in ALEP or other modern Language Engineering (LE) platforms. The "3rd AUG Workshop" will provide the opportunity to assess the current state of ALEP and to derive options and scenarios of its deployment in LE and real-life applications. To encourage participation in the "3rd AUG Workshop" of persons not yet acquainted with ALEP, the tutorial scheduled for the day before the workshop will give an introduction to the basic features of the ALEP environment, its linguistic sub-system and major tools. Workshop Sessions ----------------- Workshop contributions should be directed to one of the following sessions: * Session 1 - Language Engineering in ALEP: Achievements and Requirements This session will focus on work already done in the field of LE using ALEP as the development platform. Beyond the presentation of achievements, requirements for the future development of ALEP are expected to be derived. * Session 2 - The ALEP Platform: Recent Developments, Customization, and Tool Integration This session will focus on most recent developments of the ALEP platform, and it will give the opportunity to learn about different ways in which the ALEP system has been customized by users and about tools that have been integrated with ALEP or that are obvious candidates for integration into a platform like ALEP. * Session 3 - Industrial Perspectives of ALEP: User Needs and Application Scenarios This session will focus on the future involvement of ALEP in industrial contexts. User needs in the field of Language Technology may be presented and application scenarios drawn assessing the maturity of ALEP for industrial application. A fourth session will be devoted to a concluding discussion on prospects of the ALEP platform. The discussion will address topics such as the further promotion and deployment of ALEP and the concertation of activities relating to the future development of ALEP. Though the overall workshop will be ALEP-centered, contributions related to similarly advanced LE platforms and consistent with any of the workshop session descriptions are also invited for submission, thus allowing for a mutual exchange of results and ideas established within different settings for LE and LT.
