The plenary sessions will be held in the main Europe Lecture Hall. Bus 48 from downtown Lihge (every 10 minutes) stops right in front of the building. The EURALEX Congresses bring together scholars, professional lexicographers, publishers and others interested in dictionaries of all types. The academic programme will include an opening address by M. W. Legros, Rector of the University of Lihge, 3 plenary lectures (Prof. Anthony COWIE, University of Leeds and Dr Gregory GREFENSTETTE, Rank Xerox Research Centre, Grenoble have already agreed to give a keynote speech), a workshop on dictionary use and another one on linguistic resources, parallel sessions of individual papers, a poster session which will be opened to high-quality papers not admitted to oral presentation, and social events for participants and their guests. The Congress will be preceded by two pre-EURALEX tutorials. There will also be a book exhibition and software demonstrations. SUBMISSION OF PAPERS OR POSTERS Papers and posters are invited on all aspects of lexicography, but the principal topics of the Congress are: 1. Computational lexicology & lexicography 2. Lexical combinatorics 3. The dictionary-making process 4. Bilingual lexicography 5. Lexicographical and lexicological projects 6. Terminology and dictionaries for special purposes 7. Dictionary use Papers not fitting into any of these categories but nonetheless relevant to the Congress will be considered as well (e.g. cognitive lexicography, historical lexicography, lexical semantics, ...) All submissions will be refereed by a panel of referees for each major topic, and the programme will be selected by the Programme Committee. Individual presentations of papers should be timed to last 30 minutes, followed by a ten-minute discussion period. There are no restrictions on the language of presentation, but it is not possible to offer interpretation. Authors should send five copies of a six- to eight-page double-spaced preliminary version of their paper by OCTOBER 15, 1997(extended deadline!) to the Congress Organizers at the address above. The first page should contain the title of the paper, name(s), affiliation(s) and complete address(es) of author(s), a 10-line abstract of the paper, and (in the top right corner) the title of the topic category to which the paper is submitted (if the paper does not fit in any of the seven categories above, please use 8). Authors whose papers are accepted will receive a style guide for the preparation of a camera-ready copy for the Proceedings to be published immediately before the Congress. Presenters in poster sessions should send their poster texts by MARCH 1, 1998 to the Congress Organizers. Please tell us how much space is required (something like two square meters is an upper limit). PRE-EURALEX TUTORIALS There will be two parallel pre-EURALEX tutorials (a minimum of 15 participants for each) on Tuesday, August 4th, from 10.00 to 17.00 with a break for lunch. The fee is BF 4,000 for each. (1) Creating a Bilingual Dictionary Tutors: Michela Clari & Jeremy Butterfield The aim of the tutorial is to give attendees practical experience of how a large-sized bilingual dictionary is created. Participants will be taken through the various processes and stages: a) Specification of target user and directionality of dictionary b) Selection of headword list c) Creation of source-language framework for an entry (or entries) and tagging structure required for this. This will be done taking Collins Cobuild Bank of English data as a starting point, as well as monolingual English sources (*) and the tools currently used on the corpus, ie concordancing, frequency statistics and co-occurrence statistics. If possible, work will be done using the Collins Bilingual standard editing environment and previewing tools. d) Translation into target languages. e) Final shaping of entry through discussion between source and target speakers. The tutors: Jeremy Butterfield and Michela Clari are currently Managing Lexicographers at Collins Bilingual Dictionaries, HarperCollins Publishers, in Glasgow. They are jointly responsible for the lexicographic content of the Collins bilingual range, their brief being to supervise the setting up and monitoring of all bilingual dictionary projects up to pre-press stage, including the recruitment and training of lexicographers and the design of editorial briefs. Jeremy is Editor-in-Chief of Spanish titles and also responsible for a wide range of non-Spanish titles. Michela, who is Italian, is currently responsible for the French, German and Italian lists, while maintaining a personal involvement as Chief Editor on Italian titles. (2) Preparing a terminological data base Tutor: Alain Reichling The aim of the tutorial is to give participants some practical knowledge of what has to be taken into account when designing a TDB. Considering the expected audience, the couple termino-/lexico- will be given special attention during the introduction, as well as its relationship with related sciences. Are linguists or domain specialists better terminologists? Is a terminological glossary the same as a dictionary or a thesaurus? What data, what fields, why, how? Can domain trees help organize terminological data, how can the boundaries of a term (as opposed to words and phrases, for instance) be defined, what are the requirements to be met by a terminological entry, are some of the topics that will be examined in detail on the basis of a guided exercise. Important issues such as multilingualism vs mono/bilingualism or prescriptive vs descriptive approaches in terminology will be exemplified using EURODICAUTOM, the European Commission database. Examples of database structures will be given and discussed. Indexing of and access to terminological data will be analysed. Reference will be made to some European projects and to computer tools used by large Institutions such as the Translation Service of the European Commission, emphasizing the ever increasing need to integrate terminology into the communication process. The tutor: Alain Reichling has a linguistic background (University of Lihge), completed by training and professional experience in the computer field. He has been working at the Translation Service of the European Commission for several years. He has been involved in various multilingual projects. Until recently, he was responsible for the European terminological databank Eurodicautom. He is now heading the sector Needs analysis, definition of functional specifications of multilingual computer tools.
