____________________________________________________________ Workshop on International Proofing Tools and Language Technologies 1st Call for Papers Workshop Motivation Recent years have seen major breakthroughs in natural language processing (NLP) technology based on the development of powerful new techniques that combine linguistic information and statistical methods. A critical element that is still lacking, however, is the availability of NLP technology to end users as a default service of any system independently of working environments and application platforms. Despite the heavy usage of some Proofing Tools in specific tasks and environments there are still areas of computing systems that lack any service provided by such tools. In this respect the workshop on Proofing Tools and Language Technologies aims at sheding light on the availability and services of such tools as well as setting the grounds for their extension to other areas of computer technology. Workshop Objectives The purpose of the workshop is to bring together researchers, engineers and vendors interested in the advances and real-life applications of various Proofing Tools incorporated in their information systems. The workshop will cover different aspects of Information Systems Applications, including Database Technology, Natural Language Processing Modules, Systems Integration, Desktop Applications, Information Systems Specification and Services Improvement for sustainable development. The workshop focuses on real world applications; therefore contributors should highlight the benefits of Proofing Tools, Language Technologies and NLP applications for industrial purposes, suggesting alternatives on how to solve Informantion Systems' problems and improve their performance. Papers describing advanced approaches towards Proofing Tools design and implelementation and survey papers indicating future directions in the area of Information Systems' Applications are strongly encouraged. Papers describing original work or new approaches in any of the areas listed below are encouraged. Accepted papers, presented at the event will be published in the Proceedings of the Workshop, which will be published after the event and made available via the workshop's web site. Both full research reports and work-in-progress reports are welcome. A special session dedicated to demonstrations as well as a turorial dedicated to technical and scientific topics are also envisaged. Industrial and private sector vendors interested in demonstrating their products as well as their methodologies for Proofing Tools and applications development are invited to submit a short paper indicating the main points of their demos. Topics of Interest We invite submission of papers on topics relevant to Information Systems' Applications, Proofing Tools Development and Language Technologies, including but not limited to: -Proofing Tools Specifications with emphasis on linguistic issues -Language Technologies and multilingualism -Bussines competitiveness and NLP services improvement for meeting end users and developers requirements -Language-specific tools -Lexical resources and standardization patterns -Evaluation measures -Security mechanisms -Difficulties encountered while developing Proofing Tools -Databases and Information Systems Integration -Futute advances and perspectives in Poofing Tools development and how these affect language processing modules -Proofing Tools integration platforms Papers may address one or more of the listed topics, although contributions are not limited by them and can also discuss relevant topics that fit in one or more of the main topic areas. Important Dates Deadline for woskhop abstract submission: 30 August 2003 Notification of acceptance: 15 September 2003 Final version of full/short papers and demos for workshop proceedings: 20 October 2003 Submissions Papers should describe existing work and research connected to the topics of the workshop. The presentation at the workshop will be 20 minutes long (15 minutesd presentation and 5 minutes discussion). Each submission should include: tittle, author(s), affiliation, and contact author's e-mail address, postal address, phone and fax numbers. Extended abstracts (maximum 1,500 words), plain-text format should be sent to: aggeliki@ceid.upatras.gr The final version of the accepted submissions should be no longer that 10 A4 pages. Instructions on the format and presentation of the final version will be sent to authors upon notification of acceptance. Submissions of tutorials.
