The Query window is used to: o Formulate a query (using latin-1 characters) o Perform a search o Clear the current query o Stop a search (session), and clear the results To formulate a query: To formulate a basic keyword query: Enter "Keywords" (up to 1000). These are words, phrases, sentences which describe the topic on which you are searching for information. - common words will be eliminated - distinction between upper/lower case will be ignored - all remaining words are reduced to their stems (e.g. endings are removed). Spaces and punctuation delimit keywords but are otherwise ignored. The query data can be edited (insert, add, delete,...) as in any text field. A Latin-1 character not available on U.S. keyboards can be input by pressing the "Compose" key and then two keys as indicated in the following two tables for lower case characters. Once the Compose key has been pressed, the two keys may be pressed in any order: Char Result Char> ' ` " ~ ^ o / | | | v v v v - - - - - - - - - - a | á à ä ã â å s s -> ß e | é è ë ê a e -> æ i | í ì ï î c , -> ç o | ó ò ö õ ô ø n ~ -> ñ u | ú ù ü û t h -> þ d - -> ð Query terms suggested via relevance feedback and selected by the user for addition to the query, appear in the "Keywords" field. These terms are highlighted and each is prefixed with a "+" or "-". + indicates that documents containing this term will tend to be PROMOTED in the search result set ranking. - indicates that documents containing this term will tend to be DEMOTED in the search result set ranking. Feedback sessions are initiated from the Document List window. To add special restrictions to the basic query: Click on the "special" menu bar item and choose a type of special query (or none) from the pull-down list that appears: - Click on "proximity" to add the proximity query fields to the query window. These fields allows you to restrict the set of documents returned to those which contain: o exactly the two words entered (no stemming) o order does not matter o separated by no more than the number of words specified (all words are counted) - Click on "field" to add the field query fields to the query window. These fields allows you to restrict the set of documents returned to those which contain the selected field and within it the words entered. o Click on the "Field" button and choose a field name from the pull-down list that appears. o Enter keywords. These are stemmed and compared to the stemmed document text within the chosen field. - Click on "phrase" to add the phrase query field to the query window. This field allows you to restrict the set of documents returned to those which contain: o the word(s) entered (no stemming) o in the order specified o ignoring differences in whitespace but not punctuation - Click on "none" to remove any special query fields. To perform a search: After you have selected a server, chosen a database, and formulated a query, click on the "perform search" button. The zclient sends the search request to the current host and displays the results in the Document List window. To clear the current query: Click on the "clear query" button. Any input in the currently displayed query fields is cleared. To stop a search: Click on the "Stop search, clear results" button. The search (session) is ended and a new session is initiated. The results of any previous search are cleared. Feedback infor- mation is not retained across sessions.
